We’ve got a new puppy named Cosmic living with us for a few months.

Here’s a few photos:

Cosmic running around on top of the cliff on our neighbor's land.

For the first few days, he was really scared to be away from home (his family lives in Olympia, WA) but he has gotten a lot more comfortable now, and him and Marvin are really enjoying each others’ company (when he’s not stepping on Marvin while he’s sleeping, or nipping constantly at Marvin’s face…).

Jesse in bed watching Cosmic play with Marvin

For the first couple of nights, Cosmic was shitting all over the floor every night, but he’s stopped now, so I don’t have to walk around with a lantern looking for turds before walking around anymore. He’s pooping outside now, and helping us build up some compost. (Here’s that dog/scat/bestiality porn you were promised)

Cosmic taking a shit in the woods and looking all sheepish.

It’s been really rainy and haily and snowy for the past week so Cosmic is getting a little bit of cabin fever. He spends a lot of time shredding up cedar bark, chasing his tail, chewing on bones, and pouncing on Marvin.

Cosmic with a piece of cedar bark between his paws

Cosmic loves snuggling with Marvin, and sometimes the feeling is mutual.

Cosmic and Marvin sleeping together in the bed.

Here’s Cosmic strutting around in a snowstorm, looking like a real mountain dog:

Cosmic walking around in a snowstorm.

It’s been nice and warm here for a while now, and we were beginning to doubt whether all of this talk about cold N. Idaho whether was a vast conspiracy to scare us out of the woods … but this morning we woke up and everything was covered in snow!

So we decided to go into town to grab a bunch of last-minute stuff before we get snowed in …

But first — A WALKIE-JAWOCKY!

Earl walking in the snow

Earl and Marv were running around all over these boulders that were covered in ice and snow, and didn’t seem to be worried about the fact that they’d probably break a few bones if they fell off … I really wish that I was as hardcore as they are …

Earl and Marvin running around on icy cliffs

Here’s Stassj playing with Marv on the walk down …

Stassj playing w/ marvin in the snow

Anyhow … lot’s to do … bye!

A few weeks ago, we kept hearing a bunch of coyotes cackling in the woods near the creek. Then, Stassj was walking around one day and found this kill site in the woods … apparently the coyotes took down a moose while it was taking a water break …

Moose carcass near the creek

So we took his head, and put it in a spot where he can have a nice view of the sunset, in exchange for him watching over our garden beds. He’s done a great job so far.

Moose head on a stick

And the puppies have been playing with his corpse for weeks. Ripping off little bits of rotten skin here and there … here’s Mr. Marvin smiling while he gnaws on a pelvis.

Marvin gnawing on a rotten moose pelvis

And here’s the garden beds right now … actually they are more like compost heaps at the moment … straw, veggie scraps, eggshells, moose poop, dead mice from the cabin, apples & plums gathered from the alleyways in town … and Jesse pisses on them regularly to give them a lot of nitrogen and to balance out the pH from the wood ashes we’ve be throwing in there. And we’ve been adding mushroom spores to all of them … so hopefully we’ll be snacking on puffballs along with our squash and beans.

Our garden beds in August 2008

This is from the road that goes up to our place …

The road to our land.

Earl and Marvin taking a break after a long day of playing chase with each other.

Marvin and Earl smiling together.

This is the cabin that we moved into when we first got there. Your eyes are not playing tricks on you. It actually is leaning over. It’s about to fall down the hill. We are currently in the process of moving all of our stuff out into the smaller cabin, so we don’t die when it falls on top of us while we’re sleeping.

The road that I’m standing in there is now a bunch of garden beds covered in rotting compost and straw and mushroom spores … at night we piss off the opening on the side of the porch there. During the day, I try to piss in the garden beds to give our little mushroom babies more nitrogen, and to balance the pH from all the wood ashes I’ve been putting in there …

Instead of having the fires inside, we have them in a firepit I made in the road … but it’s getting so cold now, that we’re going to be starting to use the woodstove again … sipping tea, sitting inside and reading books … I’ll post a picture of the “library” soon …

Here is Stassj wandering around with the water bucket … probably looking for berry patches. She’s always sneaking off to eat berries or truffles or something or other. Very sneaky.

This turkey was dinner (actually several dinners, lunches, and snacks) about a week ago — Earl (a.k.a. Mr. Tooters the Blue Tick Boogler — who is notorious for his stank-nasty Balogna Tooters when he’s under the covers with me) barked him up into the top of a tree and Stassj yelled for me to bring a rifle … it’s cold now, and all of the berries are gone, but in a few weeks it will be cold enough during the days for me to shoot a deer and stuff it’s carcass somewhere in the snow near the house. Then it will be meat night every night! The pups are really looking forward to this. Stassj has been feeding them oats and cauliflower to try to appease them, but it’s just not working. They want flesh!
